HOW TO DO A METER TEST FOR A HIGH WATER BILL
The Meter Test is an easy way to identify potential leaks in water lines, allowing homeowners the chance to minimize water loss and damage by calling professionals to pinpoint and repair issues before major damage occurs.
This test takes 30 minutes
While conducting the test, stop using water throughout the property (laundry, sinks, toilets, sprinklers, etc.)
Find your water meter
Check triangle or star-shaped leak indicator for movement. If it spins, this indicates a possible leak on a water line. Write down the numbers indicated on the meter at the start of this test.
Return to check the meter reading in 30 minutes.
If the numbers did not change, you don’t have a leak in your pressurized water system.
If the numbers have changed, continue with the following steps.Shut off the valves under every toilet in the house and repeat steps 1-4.
If the numbers have not changed, you may have a running toilet. Many times this can be remedied by replacing the leaky flapper assembly and/or the fill and flush valves.
If the number has changed, this indicates water consumption even though water was not being used during the test. You may need a professional leak detection assessment.
